Dental jobs in the United Kingdom are always available, as the supply of qualified individuals does not meet the demands of the marketplace.
Members of a dental team which could include a dentist, dental hygienist, dental nurse, dental therapist and technicians, work together to provide a variety of services for patients far beyond a trip to the dentist to have teeth cleaned, removed or filled.
Many members of the dental team work proactively to teach patients how to properly care for their teeth and gums and prevent future dental problems and issues. Some dental jobs require additional training for working with children or for performing certain procedures including dental surgery.
In order to understand what each type of dental practitioner does a brief description of each role is provided below:
Dentist – these highly training professionals complete the clinical work for dealing with tooth and gum problems. They work on both the prevention of further dental problems and the treatment and resolution of current issues and concerns. Private dentists can expect to earn between an entry level rate of £ 27,000 to a senior dentists rate of £ 70,000. An NHS dentist will make slightly less as a starting salary, roughly £19,000 but at consultant level will be earning in excess of £ 90,000. Dentists may also be employed by the armed forces and are commissioned officers. Community dentists may work with children and adults in school settings or for those patients with special needs.
Dental Hygienist – specialized training in preventative measures allows the dental hygienist to work closely with the patient to teach the correct method of keeping teeth and gums healthy. The dental hygienist is also responsible for teeth cleaning, scaling as well as polishing teeth. Some dental hygienists may also be radiographers and may be required to take dental impressions for the various types of treatments and corrective procedures. Dental Nurse – as a nurse to the dental surgeon or dentists, the dental nurse is responsible for assisting with surgical and other procedures. They are responsible for caring for the patient during the treatment as well as afterwards. The dental nurse is also in charge of keeping the equipment in the surgery sterilized and setting up the surgery for a procedure.
Dental Therapist – the dental therapists works closely with a dentist to actually complete the procedure as outlined by the dentist. This role in the dental field is relatively new and sometimes dental therapists are known as Oral Health Practitioners. Most dental therapists are also dental nurses as well as having completed a degree in dental therapy. Often the dental therapists completes virtually all the procedures on the patient once they have been examined and a treatment plan developed by the dentist.

Dental Technician – the dental technician is the dental professional that actually makes the various devices that are used in improving a patients dental health. This may include making filings, crowns, bridges, dentures and even dental braces. Very specialized dental technicians known as maxillo-facial technicians help surgeons develop and customize teeth, dentures, bridges and other devices for patients that have to have extensive reconstructive surgery.
There are employment opportunities both in smaller cities, rural areas as well as the larger centers in the United Kingdom. With all the advances in dental health and reconstructive work it is possible to help almost anyone improve their overall dental health. More work is done in preventive care and teaching patients proper oral hygiene, a role that is shared by all members of the dental health group.
