If you think you want to become a doctor, you should spend a little bit of time thinking hard about that decision – it involves long years of study, it costs a lot of money, and it’s not the job for everyone. Most doctors graduate from college at 22, finish med school at 26, then finally start their careers – at the bottom of the physicians’ food chain – at 29. But if the doctor in question wants to specialize, however, there can be many more years of study after that. During this time, the medical students’ focus is primarily on their career – it can have a serious impact on whether or not you get married and start a family.
It’s not a decision to take lightly, and should be considered very carefully. Becoming a doctor is a dream for many people. When they look at the time and money it takes to become a doctor, though, they get discouraged. You can’t short-cut the process, but you can make it easier and keep your courage up. Here are ten easy tips on how to become a doctor:
1. If you are still in high school, take plenty of science and math courses. To succeed in medical school, you need to have a good background in life science, chemistry, physics and math.
2. Apply to several good colleges. Most people who go to medical school major in some kind of science. Psychology is also a good pre-med major. Go to the best college you can afford and get accepted into.
3. Work hard and get good grades.
4. Get some experience in the medical field. Get a part time job as a nurse’s aid or an EMT.
5. Take the MCAT (Medical College Admission Test).
6. Apply to several medical schools. You might not get into your school of first choice. Improve your chances of getting accepted by applying to several schools.
7. Look for financing. Medical school is expensive. Many people graduate with over $100,000 in debt. You may be able to find other financing options. Some towns will help with your medical school expenses if you will practice there for a while after graduation.
8. Learn to go without sleep. Once you get into medical school, the ride starts. You have many sleepless nights ahead of you.
9. Attend medical school, work hard and get good grades. It is grueling, but it’s also fun and exciting because you actually begin to practice medicine in medical school.
10. Persevere. You can do it. Take it a step at a time. Persevere, and you will become a doctor.
Not everyone is cut out for a career as a physician, and you should think long and hard before you head down the path. But once you do, if you’re successful you’ll have a job as one of the most appreciated, respected and valuable people on earth. Many people also go into medicine purely because of the money they can earn – and it does pay well, but that’s not the reason to become a doctor. Helping others is the greatest gift you can give, and the satisfaction that you can receive from the profession is enormous.
