Billing Manager

Career Overview

A billing manager has the responsibility of maintaining and processing all billing records, assisting with insurance disputes and claims, as well as verifying any corrections needed and working with both staff and clients to resolve any conflicts or concerns with regards to billing issues.

The billing manager works within the accounting or financial department of the hospital or healthcare facility and works closely with the financial team to ensure that the hospital billing policies and procedures are accurate and handled in a timely manner. The billing manager may have supervisory or management roles in larger facilities where there are several billing clerks or staff members.

The billing manager should have very effective communication skills and should have a good understanding of hospital procedures and policies as they pertain to billable services for patients. The billing manager should also be good at troubleshooting and resolving conflicts. Often the billing manager will work directly with the insurance company representatives or even the patients or the patient’s families so the ability to resolve conflicts effectively is critical.

The billing manager should be able to use the various computer programs and reporting procedures followed by the hospital or treatment facility. The billing manager may also be required to prepare and present weekly or monthly reports to the financial management team or other relevant stakeholders.



Career Requirements

Billing managers usually have experience using the various billing systems and software. Often billing manager may have some accounting or business management training and usually a Bachelors in Accounting or related business field is required in addition to three to five years work experience in billing systems.

If the hospital or treatment facility uses a particular billing software program experience with that specific program is often listed in the job requirements.

Job Outlook

The job outlook for billing managers is slightly higher than the national employment average according to the United States Department of Labor. It is estimated that this trend will continue until the year 2014 as more healthcare facilities and long-term treatment centers are opened across the United States.

As with all healthcare jobs there is an increase in the number of currently employed staff members that are expected to resign over the next 10 to 15 years that also increases the number of vacancies that will be created.



Career Track

A billing manager is already in a management position within the hospital or healthcare facility. An experienced billing manager may enter into jobs in consulting or may work with new staff in a mentor or trainer role for those employees entering the billing department.

Some billing managers may move into department management roles and may become Directors with additional education and experience working in the healthcare field.



Compensation

The average salary for a billing manager in the United States ranges from $58,000 to $66,000 with higher salaries for those with more experience and those employed at private care facilities. Some billing manager may earn up to $85,000, but this is the top 10% of the total number of those employed in this position.
