Admissions Director

Career Overview

An admissions director is responsible for overseeing and managing all admissions into the hospital or treatment facility. This may include admissions to nursing facilities, psychiatric treatment facilities, or medical care facilities for either short or long term treatment.

The admissions director carefully monitors the placement of patients into the correct areas of the facility as well as works with medical and treatment staff to ensure that the patient has the care that is required in the facility that they are in.

The admissions director must have excellent organizational skills and should be familiar with the hospital or facilities treatment options as well as requirements that insurance plans have regarding the payment of hospital an medical bills. The admissions director may be responsible for orientation and training of new staff with regards to hospital or facility protocols for admission as well as insurance claims and other required documentation.

As a supervisory role the admissions director must have a good ability to interact with others and provide clear verbal and written instructions and information. The admissions director will also be required to work closely with the hospital or facility management team as well as with the accounting, invoicing and billing departments. The admissions director should be familiar with computers and should be able to work with IT staff to document and track patient admissions throughout the facility.



Career Requirements

Depending on the facility or hospital that the admissions director works at the requirements may vary. Most hospitals, long-term care placements, psychiatric hospitals or hospices require that the admissions director be a registered nurse (RN) and have several years of hands-on experience working in the facility or similar healthcare setting.

A Bachelors in Nursing may also be accepted provided the nurse has some previous experience in hospital administration or management. This management should be related to patient care and or staff coordination on units or within the facility.

Job Outlook

As a mid-management position the job outlook for admissions directors is slightly above the average rate as more hospitals and treatment facilities open and existing admissions directors retire. The position is very dynamic and the type of nurses or hospital staff the work in the admissions director position can vary from facility to facility. Usually government run hospitals and other treatment centers tend to have a higher rate of vacancies for admissions director jobs as opposed to private hospitals, nursing homes and residential treatment facilities.


Career Track

Admissions directors have the opportunity to move into management positions within the hospital or treatment facility. In addition they may choose to work in mentor type positions working with new admissions directors to help them become familiar with the career and job responsibilities.


Compensation

An admissions director will earn on average $73,000 per year, with the top 10% earning over $86,000. As years of experience and training increase the salary will increase as well. Private hospitals and facilities tend to pay higher salaries than government owned and operated healthcare agencies. Larger hospitals also pay more per year than to smaller public hospitals.
